Module D: Assessment

DEFINING ASSESSMENT

Assessment:

To determine the significance of something, usually by careful appraisal and study.

To make a critical appraisal for the purpose of understanding or interpreting, or as a guide to take action.

Though experience may lead a clinician to arrive a diagnosis promptly after assessing the data, the renewed desire to develop a unique customized therapeutic program gives a moment for pause before arriving at a "diagnosis".

Diagnosis:

dia” = “complete”

“gnosis” = “knowledge”

Diagnosis = "Complete Knowledge"

By definition, a diagnosis is dependent on having complete knowledge of the patient's condition.

A Common Presentation

"I have had 18-20 different tests ran that all come out normal. I have been told there is nothing wrong with me . . . yet by the questionnaire I am TYPE 9. I have been going through a lot of symptoms for two years. Please Help!!”

"Complete Knowledge,” explains why even though her lab tests are "normal" she is still experiencing significant symptoms, and a decreased quality of life.

Though biotechnological advances continue to provide new laboratory tests, the laboratory will never provide "complete knowledge" about the patient.

Like-wise, questionnaires and extensive medical and wellness interviews will never provide "complete knowledge" about the patient.

Two points to remember when making an assessment.

Subjective data is half the work.

Objective data is half the work.

(Questionnaires are half the work.”.)

(“Lab work is half the work.”)

What's Next?

The limitations of subjective data.
