Management of Menopause Type® Seminar

Module B: Subjective Data

Other Causes of Symptoms - Testosterone Deficit Symptoms

Physical Symptoms - Neuro-Cognitive Symptoms

The reality of testosterone deficiency in women is finally being recognized (though testosterone excess is still under-recognized). While testosterone deficiency does not exist in every menopause type, when present it too can result in significant symptoms and increased health risks. In such cases restoration of function, or if need be replacement therapy, may be the best option.

Symptoms associated with testosterone deficiency are also associated with lifestyle such as lack of exercise, inadequate rest, stress, smoking, under-hydration, excessive caffeine or alcohol. Nutrient deficiencies brought on by dieting or lifestyle may also precipitate some of these symptoms. In addition, other endocrine dysfunctions, especially adrenal fatigue may be to blame for the symptoms. At the very least, non-hormonal interventions should always be considered as an option or as an adjunct to natural hormone replacement therapy.

Consider the following a partial list of other cause of “testosterone deficiency symptoms”.

Clinical Application:

As valuable as testosterone is in woman’s healthcare, other causes of symptoms should be considered first. Lifestyle and nutritional review with the Patient Intake Form will help disclose these symptoms.  Non-hormonal interventions should always be considered as an option or as an adjunct to natural hormone replacement therapy.

What's Next?

A review of other causes of the symptoms commonly associated with androgen excess will be covered next.
