Addressing the Special Needs of Urinary incontinence and urinary
tract infections (UTIs) in perimenopause, menopause
& postmenopause women are often associated with urethral atrophy, which
may occur concurrently with vaginal atrophy. Frequent UTIs
may be precipitated by chronic low grade intermittent stress incontinence.
The female urethra functions best when optimal estrogens & androgen
function maintain peri-urethral collagen, and
androgens maintain urethral tone. In addition, vaginal
dryness and change in vaginal flora is a predisposing factor.
The same to formulations used in vaginal atrophy can affectively be used for
frequent UTIs. While menopause associated atrophic vaginitis, frequent
urinary tract infections is recognized as due to decreased hormone levels,
therapeutic interventions are often prescribing antibiotics or estrogens. A
better approach is to support the normal function of hormone producing
glands, and the function of the vaginal tissues that respond to hormones.
Enhancing hormone function requires first & foremost healthy lifestyle
and dietary habits as discussed in the Integrative Management
of Endocrine Dysfunction document. It is important to realize that
both estrogen and testosterone are required for optimal urethral health and
tone. Consider the following if indicated: |
