Addressing the Special Needs of
Insomnia
in Perimenopause, Menopause & Postmenopause

Insomnia associated with menopause, or that has become worse with menopause changes, is most frequently due to shifting or deficient hormone levels, which affect the nervous system and the adrenal gland (which also responds to stress) to the point that is results in disturbed sleep.

It is important to realize that other factors that contribute to insomnia must be addressed as well. These include excessive evening alcohol consumption, which can oppose melatonin. Consumption of caffeine any time after noon. May contribute to insomnia, even if it was tolerated before menopause.

While prescription drugs or powerful herbal sedatives may appear to be a good way to “naturally” treat insomnia, it is best to discern and address the underlying cause– which is often hormonal in women of menopause age.

As always, enhancing hormone function requires first & foremost healthy lifestyle and dietary habits as discussed in the Understanding Hormone Restoration The following formulations may be used as indicated:

Decreased Estrogen Function:

Menopause associated insomnia is predominantly due to decreased estrogen function and the accompanying vasomotor instability. In such cases, restoring normal estrogen function is important. When there are other signs of vasomotor instability, Choose:

Estro-Mend - When there is suboptimal estrogen function, the mechanism of action appears to be due to vasomotor instability. This formulation can restore normal function of estrogens sensitive tissues, and decrease vasomotor symptoms, which can affectively decrease sleep dysfunction such as insomnia. The hops in this formulation make it especially beneficial in supporting normal sleep. Sage contributes to healthy sleep by its GABA binding properties. More Information on Estro-Mend

Decreased Progesterone Function:

When progesterone function is supported, then calming effect on nervous tissues helps promote normal sleep. When there are other progesterone deficiency symptoms, consider:

Progesto-Mend - Normal progesterone function restores normal nerve and sleep function. The Passiflora incarnata in this formulation contributes to healthy sleep by its GABA binding properties. Other signs of decreased progesterone function include hot flushes, anxiety and irritability, which can be relieved by this formulation.  More Information on Progesto-Mend
