Adrenal Fatigue & Menopause by Joseph J Collins, ND

Menopause Type® Questionnaire

Protocols Based On Menopause Primary Concern

Addressing the Special Needs of Adrenal Fatigue in Perimenopause, Menopause & Postmenopause.
The adrenal glands play the most important role in helping the body transition into menopause, and maintain quality of life after menopause. During and after the menopause transition the adrenal glands are recruited to increase their contributions of hormones to make up for decreased contribution by the ovaries. Possible causes for decreased adrenal function in menopause include; Decreased Estrogen Function; Decreased Progesterone Function &/or Decreased Testosterone Function as outlined below. Since the adrenal-thyroid connection is so strong that fatigue in one will ultimately result in fatigue of the other, Decreased Thyroid Function should also be considered. Blood Sugar Disorders are another cause of fatigue. Addressing the underlying cause will relieve the additional stress on the adrenal glands, and allow it to assist the body during and after the menopause transition.

Decreased Estrogen Function:

Dropping estrogen levels, as well as levels that are already low, decrease the ability of the body to tolerate stress, which can precipitate adrenal fatigue in women. Supporting normal estrogen function with herbs, such as Bacopa, Schisandra and hops can enhance stress response and help support adrenal function. When there is a decreased ability to tolerate stress, with suboptimal function of estrogen, choose:

Estro-Mend™- Most of the herbs in this formulation have significant ability to enhance stress tolerance. Published clinical data suggests that black cohosh may be useful for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, including stress & anxiety. Don quai has mildly sedative & tranquilizing properties, as does Bacopa monniera. Hops are well known for its sedative effects that can reduce anxiety. Sage binds to GABA receptors, resulting in calming actions. Schisandra has been used to treat irritability. More Information on Estro-Mend™

Decreased Progesterone Function:

The adrenal glands are the primary source of progesterone and other natural progestogens. These molecules provide “neuro-sedative”, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties. This can increase chronic nerve & tissue irritability, ultimately resulting in adrenal fatigue. In these situations, restoring normal function of progesterone with adrenal supporting phytoprogesterones and adaptogens such as Rehmannia & Bupleurum is the best course of action. When there is chronic nerve & tissue irritability, choose:

Progesto-Mend - This formulation mimics the ability of progesterone to be calming and promote tranquility due to its ability of Rehmannia & Bupleurum to support normal adrenal gland function, recalling that the adrenal glands are is the primary source of progesterone in non-cycling women. In addition The Passiflora incarnate has been shown to be particularly effective in treating stress & anxiety, possibly by binding to GABA receptors, as does progesterone. More Information on Progesto-Mend

Decreased Testosterone Function:

In ability to tolerate stress due suboptimal function of androgens are both a cause and a sign of adrenal fatigue. In women that have anxiety that is strongly associated with fear and social withdrawal, there may be adrenal related androgen deficiency that needs to be addressed. When there is inability to tolerate stress with suboptimal function of androgens, choose:

Testo-Gain- This formulation supports the normal response of the nervous system to androgens. Enhanced motivation, drive, confidence, and feelings of self-worth can decrease the incidence and severity of anxiety. More Information on Testo-Gain

Decreased Thyroid Function:

When the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid, or the cells of the body do not respond to thyroid hormone as effectively as they should, generalized fatigue, weight gain and other symptoms associated with sub optimal thyroid function will result. The adrenal-thyroid connection is so strong that fatigue in one will ultimately result in fatigue of the other.

Thyro-Mendshould be used if suboptimal thyroid function is present – see Suboptimal Thyroid Protocol.

Blood Sugar Disorders:

Feelings of fatigue, anxiety, or any other symptoms that worsen after a meal suggest that there is an unhealthy shift of blood sugar levels. Though blood sugar disorders (dysglycemias) can range from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) to high blood sugar (hyperglycemia & diabetes), all forms of blood sugar disorder should be treated seriously. The drop in blood sugar after eating is often a predecessor to insulin resistance, which eventually results to diabetes.

Glucobrium should be used if fatigue occurs after eating, especially if there are blood sugar disorders in family
