Session Two - Your Quality of Life |
How do you feel? |
The first
step involves collecting information about your symptoms and how you feel.
This type of information is called "Subjective
Data". Subjective data says a lot about your quality of life. |
Subjective
means that it is something that only you can perceive about yourself. In the
truest sense, only you know how you feel, so your doctor depends upon you to provide this information. Aches, pains, feelings of weakness,
fatigue and feelings of irritability or anxiety are all subjective. |
Hot flashes,
vaginal dryness and night sweats are mainly subjective, even though they may
be observed on examination. |
Your doctor
will gather information about how you feel through two methods. First you
will be asked to fill our paperwork, such as an intake form that asks a
number of questions. Typically it will include a checklist that covers a wide
range of symptoms. It will ask about your medical history and should also ask
about lifestyle choices such as smoking or the use of alcohol and caffeine. |
It's
important to provide as much information as the doctor requests. The doctor
is there to help you interpret and understand the symptoms. Do not expect
your doctor to guess what you are feeling. It's not the best use of time. |
In addition
to the intake form, your doctor will ask you a number of questions. This is
called the "Medical Interview". Your doctor uses the medical interview
to gather more detail that will help reveal your unique needs. |
A
combination of these two methods - a medical interview guided by the
information that you provided in the intake form - is obviously the most effective
method of collecting subjective data. |
The
Menopause Type® Questionnaire |
In
addition to an intake form that asks general questions about your health and
symptoms, your healthcare professional may use the Menopause Type®
Questionnaire, a specialized intake form that helps collect and analyze your
symptoms. The questionnaire will show what type of menopause you have based
on the subjective symptoms of menopause. The
Menopause Type® Questionnaire includes symptoms that may be seen with
deficiencies of estradiol, progesterone and testosterone as well as symptoms
that may be seen when there is excessive testosterone or other androgens. The
questionnaire includes both physical and psychological symptoms. |
What this
means to You |
Your
symptoms provide valuable information that can help you and your healthcare
professional create a plan tailored to your unique needs. |
What's
Next? |
Next we will
look at a list of some of the many symptoms associated with menopause. |
