Menopause
Choices |
In the book “What’s Your Menopause
Type?” and throughout this website, women are advised that managing their
menopause type is not just taking hormones. Though hormone replacement
therapy may be appropriate, there are other choices that can help restore and
maintain health, decrease risks for disease and enhance the quality of your
life. These choices include lifestyle & exercise, diet & nutritional
supplements, herbs & "phytoestrogens", homeopathy and hormone
precursors. |
With choices ranging from lifestyle to hormone replacement
therapy, it helps to recognize that the choices may be grouped into two major
categories. These categories are "Foundational Therapies" and
"Advanced Therapies". |
Foundational
Therapies |
Foundational therapies are supportive to the body and may enhance normal hormone production.
We know that inadequate sleep; lack of exercise, and
poor nutrition can result in poor health and decreased ability to make
hormones. With this in mind, proper lifestyle choices are the first course of
action, followed by a balanced diet with adequate nutrients and proper
elimination. Then herbs and homeopathy can be used to enhance the vitality
and function of the tissues. "It’s important to note that herbs
and homeopathy are more effective in a body that has adequate rest, has
proper nutrition, and has good elimination." |
All of these foundational therapies can, and should
be started on the first visit to your doctors' office. Specific choices for
foundational therapies are based upon your symptoms, which are discussed in
the second session of this educational class. |
Advanced
Therapeutics |
Advanced therapeutics is more directive, and can raise
hormone levels by directly stimulating hormone production, or directly replacing
the hormone. The more advanced therapeutics such as glandulars,
hormone precursors or natural hormones should wait until more objective data
such as lab tests are available. Objective data reflect your risk for
disease, which will be covered in the third session of the educational class. |
Implementation
of Foundational Therapies and Advanced Therapeutics is as follows: |
Foundational
Therapies: Therapies based on your symptoms. |
First: |
Address proper rest and exercise and other lifestyle choices |
Inadequate rest, sleep
deprivation in particular, will cause decreased production many hormones. Exercise can actually raise hormone levels. Tobacco,
caffeine and alcohol are all capable of decreasing hormone levels. |
Followed By: |
Attention to a balanced
diet & adequate nutrients with proper elimination should also be
addressed at this time. |
Dozens of vitamins and minerals are
directly involved in the production of hormones. The various foods, spices and
herbs, which have “phytoestrogens” and other valuable phytonutrients,
should be a regular component of a healthy diet. Proper elimination is also important to help rid
the body of internal toxins and toxins from the environment. |
Then: |
Enhance vitality and function using herbs and homeopathy. |
Herbs that act as uterine tonics, adaptogens, and
nervines are beneficial in treating various menopause types. Homeopathy is
also an option to consider at this time. |
Advanced
Therapeutics: Therapies based on objective data such as lab
tests. |
After That: |
Try glandulars if appropriate to the menopause type. |
Glandulars are
traditionally used to restore the normal function and to rejuvenate the
targeted tissues. Some menopause types may use glandulars. |
Next: |
Consider hormone
precursors. |
Hormone precursors such as DHEA and pregnenolone
may increase the production of hormones. |
Then Finally: |
Consider
natural hormone replacement therapy. |
Hormone replacement therapy is a valid option if
normal production of hormones cannot be restored by other means. The
objective of hormone replacement must always be to use the lowest dose
required for decreasing your risk of disease and enhancing the quality of
your life. |
What
this means to you |
The educational class "Managing Your Menopause
Type®" will continue to advise approaching therapies with
this order in mind. The goal continues to be maintaining and restoring normal
hormone levels, while keeping hormone precursors and hormone replacement therapy
as later options. |
