Hysterectomy and Menopause Type

Answers, by Dr. Joseph Collins

Question:

I took the questionnaire and my type is 8. I had a hysterectomy at age 44, three years ago and my ovaries, cervix and tubes were removed with my uterus because of huge fibroids and extreme endometriosis. Does this have an impact on my type? I am taking Premarin 1.25 and never noticed any improvement when taking progesterone cream. My worst symptoms were insomnia, mood swings and depression.

Answer:

A total hysterectomy can often lead to deficiency of estradiol, progesterone and testosterone - a deficiency of all three hormones. If you are only taking an estrogen and not taking any progesterone or testosterone then it makes sense that when you take the questionnaire that you would show up as progesterone and testosterone deficient.

A balance of all three hormones is required for optimal function of all tissues in the body. Symptoms such as insomnia, mood swings and depression can be caused by deficiency in any of the three hormones - and the questionnaire suggests you are still low in progesterone and testosterone. To confirm these deficiencies you should have all three hormones tested.

This is really a classic presentation. Remember that the premise of Menopause Types is that all three hormones are required for optimal health. If all three are deficient because of a total hysterectomy, then giving only estrogen will not restore optimal health. Talk to your physician or pharmacist about evaluating all three hormones and achieving balance.

Please remember that proper nutrition, exercise, herbs and phytoestrogens like soy are choices that should be considered as well.
