About Phytoprogesterones & Progestogenic Herbs: Phytoprogesterones are a class of phyto-compounds that mimic progesterone and may provide the calming, soothing, anti-inflammatory, anti-autoimmune, spasmolytic, and cardioprotective effects of progesterone by supporting healthy nervous, immune, digestive, cardiovascular, and other systems prone to agitation, stress, spasms or cramps. Progestogenic herbs are a class of adaptogens that may optimize the healthy proper hormone producing function of the adrenal glands, which are the primary source of postmenopause progesterone, without causing agitation. Herbs which mimic the effects of progesterone by promoting calming, anti-inflammatory and other functions are included to complement the phytoprogesterones and progestogenic herbs.

Rehmannia: Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) is considered an adaptogen that enhances adrenal function and normalizes blood glucose. It works with the neuroendocrine system, affecting adrenal function in such an extent as to normalize blood sugar imbalances and improve glucose tolerance. It can provide both antiallergy properties and improved immunity. The anti-inflammatory activity in the central nervous system can help maintain proper brain function. Rehmannia has been shown to stimulate the proliferation and activities of osteoblasts, while inhibiting the generation and resorptive activities of osteoclasts. In animal studies is has shown a preventive effect on osteoporotic bone loss induced by an ovariectomy. Other studies have documented cardioprotective and antitumor activity.

Bupleurum: Bupleurum (Bupleurum falcatum) is an adrenal adaptogen with significant anti-inflammatory actions. One of its constituents, saikogenin A, is able to stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system by promoting the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which is responsible for maintaining the size and function of the adrenal gland. Its anti-inflammatory actions may include an inhibitory activity against allergic asthma.

Passion Flower: Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnate) contains a number of constituents, including benzoflavone that exhibit calming, soothing and antispasmodic properties. Studies have demonstrated its effectiveness for restlessness, irritability, anxiety and insomnia, while at the same time exhibiting aphrodisiac and libido-enhancing properties. Its calming ability has also shown antiasthmatic properties. The activity of Passiflora constituents may be linked to an interaction with GABA receptors.

Coleus Forskohlii: Coleus (Coleus Forskohlii) contains forskolin, an active constituent that has been shown to stimulate production of progesterone in human adrenal gland tissue. Serum progesterone levels were actually increased in a small study of 20 women taking forskolin. Forskolin has exhibited a wide range of soothing and inflammation properties and has demonstrated antiallergy, anti-asthma, antiglaucoma, antihypertensive, antispasmodic actions. Forskolin and stigmasterol, a plant steroid also found in Coleus forskohlii, have both exhibited anticarcinogenic properties.

Vitex Agnus-Castus: Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus) has long been considered to be a progesterone enhancing herb. Vitex agnus-castus has demonstrated the ability to improve levels of progesterone during the luteal phase of menstruating women. When endometrial cells were exposed to Vitex agnus-castus there was binding to both estrogen and progesterone receptors. However, it did not demonstrate estrogenic activity, while it did stimulate progesterone receptor expression. This confirms observations that progesterone-like benefits of V. agnus-castus are not exclusively associated with the luteal phase. This herb has also been useful in treating breast pain and has cytotoxic activity against human breast cancer and other cancer cells, a quality that may be benefited by its additional ability to inhibit excessive prolactin secretion.

Dioscorea Villosa: Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) has antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties that first earned Dioscorea villosa the name “colic root” because of the gastrointestinal relief it offers. Its ability to relieve inflammatory and spasm conditions of the female reproductive organs or any pains caused by spasm has expanded its use. Dioscorea villosa has the ability to relax the autonomic nervous system and therefore decrease vasomotor symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats which are associated with autonomic dysfunction. Diosgenin, an active constituent of D. villosa, has also demonstrated antitumor and antiproliferative activity. The Dioscorea villosa extract in this formula is the true herbal extract – not progesterone.

Peony Root: Peony (Paeonia lactiflora) has traditionally been used to treat excessive uterine bleeding and excessive vaginal discharge (leucorrhea) as well as menopause symptoms. Traditional use for brain dysfunction is validated by animal studies demonstrating its cognitive enhancing abilities. Other studies have demonstrated strong antioxidant, anticancer, cholesterol lowering and antihyperglycemic properties.♦
